New on the Big Island
Oticon Zeal Hearing Aids on the Big Island
A new generation of hearing aid has arrived: Oticon Zeal combines a near-invisible in-ear design, flagship AI sound processing, and full Bluetooth LE Audio streaming. For Big Island residents, there’s a fourth advantage that matters even more, Zeal is built for remote care, so you spend less time driving for appointments and more time hearing.
How It Works
The Technology Inside Oticon Zeal
Most hearing aid pages skip the technology. We won’t, the patients who come to us have usually done their homework and want real answers. Here’s what’s inside Zeal and why each piece matters.
The Sirius Chip + Deep Neural Network
Zeal runs on Oticon’s newest Sirius processing platform, the same chip that powers their flagship behind-the-ear hearing aid, the Intent. Inside that chip is a Deep Neural Network (DNN 2.0) trained on 12 million real-world sound scenes.
Older hearing aids handled noise with rules-based programming. The DNN is different. It has effectively “heard” millions of scenes and learned what speech sounds like inside each one. The result is a more accurate, more natural separation of speech from background, and far less of the processed, artificial sound that has frustrated hearing aid wearers for decades.
BrainHearing™ — Why It Matters
Oticon’s long-standing philosophy is that your brain, not the hearing aid, is what truly understands speech. The hearing aid’s job is to deliver a complete, balanced sound picture so your brain doesn’t have to work overtime to fill in what’s missing. Patients describe the result as more natural and less tiring.
Bluetooth LE Audio + Auracast
Bluetooth LE Audio is the next generation of Bluetooth, lower power, higher audio quality, and built to support broadcast audio (Auracast). Zeal is one of the first prescription in-ear hearing aids to include it. Stream calls, music, and podcasts directly from an iPhone or LE Audio-enabled Android device.
IP68 Encapsulated Build
Zeal is constructed using a new encapsulation technique that seals the internal electronics inside a single, solid body. That earns the highest IP68 rating against dust and water ingress, important when vog, humidity, and an unexpected downpour on the Saddle Road are all part of a normal week.
Care That Fits Big Island Life
Why Remote Care Matters Here
Driving from Hilo to Kona, or from Volcano down to Naalehu, is not a small commitment. Most patients don’t want to spend half a day for a 15-minute adjustment. Zeal is built for this reality.
Companion App
Adjust volume, switch programs, control streaming, and use the built-in “find my hearing aids” feature — all from your phone.
Remote Adjustments
When something needs a professional touch, our team can adjust your hearing aids remotely through the app. No appointment drive.
Same-Day Initial Fitting
Instant-fit modular design means your first fitting is typically completed in one visit, important when you’ve already made the trip.
Great Match
Zeal Is a Good Fit If You…
- ✓Have mild to moderate hearing loss
- ✓Strongly prefer a hearing aid no one can see
- ✓Use a smartphone regularly and want clean call streaming
- ✓Want a same-day fitting rather than a multi-week build
- ✓Live somewhere remote and value remote adjustments
Different Option
A Different Device May Suit You If You…
- ✓Have severe or profound hearing loss
- ✓Have dexterity or vision challenges that make a tiny device hard to handle
- ✓Produce significant ear wax (we can discuss maintenance)
- ✓Want a behind-the-ear style with more amplification headroom
In those cases, the Oticon Intent or Oticon Real may be a stronger choice, and we carry both. See our full invisible hearing aid options or learn about our complete brand lineup. We recommend what’s right for you, not what’s newest.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Zeal really work with Android phones?
Yes, with newer Android devices that support Bluetooth LE Audio. We’ll check your specific phone at your appointment. Apple compatibility is broad and includes recent iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models.
How does Zeal compare to the Oticon Intent?
Same processor, same AI, same BrainHearing approach. The difference is form factor and power range. Intent is receiver-in-canal with more amplification headroom for moderate-to-severe losses. Zeal is in-the-ear, focused on discreet fit and lighter losses.
What about ear wax?
Any in-ear hearing aid needs a small amount of regular maintenance to keep wax from blocking the receiver. The routine takes about 30 seconds a day, and we provide ongoing wax-guard replacements as part of our care plans.
How long do the hearing aids last?
Typical lifespan for modern prescription hearing aids is five to seven years. The Zeal rechargeable battery is rated for years of daily charging cycles.
Can I try Zeal before committing?
Absolutely. We offer trial periods so you can wear the hearing aids in your real life, home, work, family, before deciding. If they’re not right, we’ll find something that is.
